Tales-inspired music?
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:02:38 am »
Okay so going in the gen board because this technically has nothing to do with the show, since I'm talking about music that is not from the show.

So here's my question: do you guys have any music that makes you think of My Little Pony Tales? I have a lot of music that totally makes me think of the characters and can always get me in the mood to write about them, and I'm always interested in hearing what influences other people. :)

(Warning: this post is probably going to devolve into me rambling about my various ideas for the characters!)

90s Goodness!

Okay so I have to start with my very first Tales anthem!! This one even has an entertaining back story: back when Tales was on TV, I was (even then) always coming up with my own ideas for storylines, and one of my favourite things to do with the kids was to have them all be into music (I would usually make them a bit older, between 13-16). So everyone was involved in bands, and everyone would perform at talent shows! Even the boys! Amusingly enough at that time, my Ace and Starlight had a rocky relationship (he cheated on her; even at 12 I couldn't just let the kids lead happy lives!) and he decided to write her a song to apologize for being a terrible person (er pony;)). So he got Teddy and Lancer to sing backing vocals for him, oh yeah, and this was his song to her!

However! Seeing as this song was a one-hit-wonder by a little Canadian band, I could not find any proof of this song existing a few years later (once the internet became a thing and I started looking up old favourite songs). I remembered it in great detail, but I searched and searched for YEARS for this song on-line, only to find nothing (I couldn't even find info on the band). Every 6-7 months I would try searching for this song again, but I never found anything. It got to the point where, after a good 10+ years of searching and finding nothing, I started to wonder if this song even existed at all, or if I had the name and artist completely wrong! But then a few years ago I searched again and all of a sudden - someone had uploaded it!! It was honestly one of the happiest moments of my life. ♥

"The Truth" by Banned In The UK - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9i61BzFISs

Carrying on in terms of the trio and them singing - not only would they perform cheesy love songs, but they would also perform tougher songs to ensure they still had street cred! My absolute favourite song for them to perform, back in the early 90s?
"Pass The Mic" by Beastie Boys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAbOHbjxT-s: Just in case anyone cares - Ace was MCA, Teddy was Mike D, and Lancer was AdRock. Yes, I used to lie in bed and listen to this song and picture those three rapping this song at a talent show.  8)

One last song before I move to the girls: Teddy was also involved with another group, though he'd mostly work on music for them! But he did perform one song with them live! And I can't believe I'm linking this here but you can all laugh at teenybopper Kat, it's okay. ;)
"Rump Shaker" by Wrecks-n-Effect - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHj6D4OoavM: Not gonna lie either - I KNOW that my reason for linking this song to Teddy was because one of guys in the song is called Teddy, and he says "It's Teddy..." so to my 12 year old brain, I immediately thought of Tales Teddy. Granted I don't think I really grasped the concept of what this song was really about at the time. But that just makes it way more hilarious to me now!

Okay now I'll get to the girls! So remember how I mentioned Ace cheating on Starlight and writing her a song? Well it worked and they got back together and everyone was happy! Then fast forward a year later and guess what? He cheats on her again! Horrible. She refuses to get back together with him a second time despite his pleading and writing her more songs! Instead Melody convinces her that maybe she should write him a song instead, telling him off? She does! (Honestly I think I liked putting Ace and Starlight through tons of stupid drama because my life was completely drama-free! Anyway I obviously have had this music thing going on constantly because despite the original idea being from the early 90s, I was still playing with the plot of it 8 years later with this song!)

"Days Like That" by Sugar Jones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrbWYkvk3RU: Needless to say when Ace heard Starlight sing this song for him, he was not pleased. I'm pretty sure at this point he spiralled down into depression but tried to hide it by partying all the time and showing up with random girls! Eventually they ended up reconciling, though. I'm sure it was probably because of some super lame song that Ace was going to write her (but I can't remember what I would have used for it now).

Speaking of Melody - let's get to my #1 90's pop inspiration for her and the Rockin' Beats!

"Under Your Spell" by Candi & The Backbeat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EVL-kpZgdc: 90's pop at its best, right here! To be honest I actually didn't like this song when it first came out (back in 1990), but then after watching Tales, I was actively listening to the radio for songs I could use for my Tales talent shows, and I heard this again and I went from hating it to loving it! Gotta love a show when it pushes you to expand your musical tastes...

Now, the girls enjoy some success with their happy and romantic pop sound, but then they lose a Battle of the Bands contest to a group of guys who mock the girls and say their music is soft! Ugh, how dare those arrogant jerks, right?! So the girls decide to rock out a bit more with their sound!

"Too Hot" Alanis Morissette - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar7afdfBHj4: This song gets so much hate but I don't care, I love it! It's totally my Rockin' Beats as "bad girls" anthem.

Anyway now for some random songs that just make me think of the show itself (or characters; but they're not "talent show performance" songs!).

"I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Q3mHyzn78: Pretty sure this is my personal Tales theme song! I especially love it because it never really specifies that the lyrics are meant in any kind of romantic sense - just generally about doing things you're not supposed to be doing in secret! So it works on pretty much every level. :)

"Too Many Walls" by Cathy Dennis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJSWPANiKHs: So I'm fairly certain that this was my VERY FIRST song for Ace and Starlight! ♥

"Only Human" by Lee Aaron - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgl_9ZVTQKk: I can see Melody being a big Lee Aaron fan! Since she was more in the 80's, I like to think that Melody's mom was a big Lee Aaron fan, and she introduced Melody to rock music through Lee Aaron's stuff! So she was Mel's first rock idol.

"Oh Father" Madonna - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-tfEwi0ETA: I like to think that this song had a lot to do with my decision to give Ace a father who didn't care about him (I know I used to listen to it and think about him). Granted this song is also a cause of great pain and turmoil for me, because there was one day in particular when I was listening to this song on "repeat" (haha, more like constantly rewinding my tape!) and I had dreamed up the most amazing idea EVER regarding Ace and his dad (and it also involved all of the Tales kids to some degree) and it was so brilliant and perfect and I went to sleep with the biggest smile on my face because I had this perfect idea all plotted out and I was going to write it down when I got up the next day! Cue me waking up the next day and not remembering anything about it! I believe this happened when I was 14? Maybe 15? And it has haunted me to this very day because I still have no idea what this idea was!

"Keep It Together" by Madonna - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHek0kaNXjY: Um hello, Bon Bon theme song!

"Always Be My Baby" by Mariah Carey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfRNRymrv9k: Yeah this video may have possibly had something to do with my initial obsession regarding summer camp! Which is yet another example of this show and these characters getting me interested in music I otherwise would not have listened to: when this song came out, I was super into hard rock/metal, so I would not have been caught dead listening to Mariah Carey! But then I happened across the video one day, and it got me thinking about putting the Tales kids at camp, and then I grudgingly started listening to the actual song too. ;)

"This Used To Be My Playground" by Madonna - http://youtu.be/_Lburl8lMxI: Okay so this song, coupled with the movie it was used in (A League of Their Own - sports oriented drama) obviously this song became my #1 inspiration for Ace and whatever dramatic idea I could dream up involving the sport of soccer. I still use this song as inspiration any time I write Ace drama!

"Something To Say" by B2Krazy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfOCxARLSis: So hopefully I'm not alone in this, but I think the male singer sounds a lot like Teddy's VA! Anyway it's a cute song about a sweet and innocent relationship, and even though I don't ship Teddy and Sweetheart, I consider this to be their theme song anyway!

All right, I think I've said enough. I'll stop myself here before I start rambling about my Linkin Park obsession! (Being that I love to picture LP as being Ace and Teddy's band...) So please feel free to share any music you listen to that puts you in the mood to think about the Tales kids!  ;D

Ace cheating on Starlight... I could totally imagine canon Ace doing that, with how big of a jerk he is to Starlight. He'd just need to want another girl at his arm and she just didn't happen to be into polygyny. But YOUR Aces are consistently happy with Starlight. And he doesn't believe in polygyny (I don't think). What reason could he POSSIBLY have for cheating? I'm just curious. But you're right, the song fits for the situation you describe.

Also, in the future, here's an idea: instead of searching for a song title, search for a song lyric. BUT, put it in quotation marks. As Boolean operators, these will find those words when they appear in a long string, as opposed to just bits and pieces of any word appearing anywhere.

Oh, pfft! Ace, Teddy and Lancer rapping is such a humorous idea. Them rapping about rapping like these gentlemen are doing is just... pfft, what? l8Y

The "Rump Shaker" thing with Teddy is pretty funny. I tie things with the Tales ponies ALL the time. Not music, because I only listen to the stuff from TV shows I like and the instrumentals from my favorite games. And, as much as I love them, they have no place in this post.

Okay, first thing's first... The image at the beginning of Days Like That is SO 90S!

Now that that's out of my system, great song. Very fitting too, especially the little 'you're back again' type lines. But you already knew that. And are you SERIOUS about Ace spiraling into depression? Because, other than Patch, he's THE least likeliest of the group to be depressed... Melody has her dad. She was still pretty depressed when he was brought up that once in the show.

You're right that those boys ARE arrogant jerks... but good for Melody. If they truly liked the heavier sound, then they got out better than when they came it.

I forget everyone's individual backstory for how they got into Tales... but didn't you sneak downstairs every morning to watch it in secret? Or was that mlptfan? If it really IS you, then I see how it'd be your song for Tales.

I see how Too Many Walls applies to Ace and Starlight.

Nice headcanon on the Lee Aaron point! She seems like a strong lady in Only Human. Of course, that was they wanted me to think.

A Kat idea... gone...? )8'0 I thought you were gonna say something like, "This song reminds me of what my adoptive dad was like..." and I was going to be all, "oh, I'm sorry" but then forget about it. (serious text ->) But it turns out that I'M HURT by the lack of this idea!

So... this song... is one of Friendship's Treasure's parents! 80 I'm looking at history here!

So, basically, "This Used to Be My Playground" is your inspiration for very story you've ever written to some extent?

I'm uncertain about my shipping of Teddy and Sweetheart... But I don't see how that male singer sounds like a twerp tweenage boy.

http://legacy-cdn.smosh.com/smosh-pit/032011/pun-link-in-park.jpg It had to be said.

Now, on to my own thoughts on songs. Truthfully, I don't listen to music very much. If there's a TV show I like with songs, I'll listen to the song and think about the situations in songs that might fit for Tales. Littlest Pet Shop has the BEST songs in a cartoon I've heard to this day, if you don't mind the teen pop coming up sometimes.

I also listen to instrumentals from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (and, when it fits, Super Smash Bros. Brawl) when I'm writing a scene. But there are a few songs that I should mention.

Cobra Starship - Fool Like Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80pqlromyvE Even if I'm not a huge fan of Sweetheart/Teddy... this song is perfect to describe their relationship. In EVERY way. Except for Sweetheart's obsession with Teddy. But everything else is pretty spot on!

Sgt. Frog third opening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX44gPfhXLY ...I watch anime sometimes, so sue me. Obviously it's in Japanese, but I still think about Patch when I hear it! Either she's being a popular solo singer, she's forcing a juice box into Bon Bon's face while she's trying to do something else, or she's on her first date (with Bon Bon).

Won't Have to Look Too Far - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLxKooggU38 The first portions of this song would totally be the second opening for Tales if it had one. It's so inspiring, and what they say pretty much match what the girls would say if they were encouraging someone! I mean, really, Pepper the skunk and Vinnie the gecko match spot-on!

Nice songs everyone!

I'll likely find some to fit the cast later, but for now:

Melody: The Dollyrots, Because I'm Awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2By1X26GqE

Sweetheart: Earthbound trilogy main theme, Pollyanna I Believe in You: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHCGfWfr43w

Brighteyes and Lancer: Zombina and the Skeletones, Guess What I Love You: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzU6HqXNR3I

Patch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSR1yW6Isx8

Wasn't entirely sure for Clover, but here's a quirky dance track I think works for her: Caravan Palace Suzy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j95HbhTl60k

"Because I'm Awesome" goes for Ace AND Melody. So well, too.

"Pollyanna I Believe in You" I was just playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I don't get why this song wasn't in there... it fits Sweetheart for some odd reason.

"Guess What? I love you" does suit Bright Eyes and Lancer, with the entire brainy love type thing.

"Riding on a Rainicorn" Shows Patch in all her cuckoolander glory. XD The fact that it comes from Adventure Time just makes it better.

Thanks Notes. :3

Yeah as you can see I've got an eclectic taste in music.

For Patch I imagine she was having that song in her head when she met the unicorns. :p

Hahaha Bonbon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR6k5ZPezeE

Or: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4z82byt5mA

Yeah I'm a Mother fan, sue me. :p

I like quick, bouncy tracks myself, so yay for similar tastes. If only Adventure Time existed in '92. I bet she'd be a huge fan. And I mean HUGE. Humor that's up her alley as well as adventure. I wonder, if there was a Tales parallel universe with the characters in the Adventure Time world, who would be Jake? Princess Bubblegum? Ice King? I dare ask, Flame Princess?

But that Bon Bon song... a bit overreactive, if you ask me.

Wow, I am collecting music over the past few days, and Cathy Dennis and Madonna were my first choices (years 1989 to 1991, best era). Seeing that you included them in your list just proves we are in the same boat!

Alright, here's another song that had me thinking of the Tales girls.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyTQNGYfYmo - Girl Time

This song fits perfectly for the girls! If you want to do some character equating, Pepper is Patch, Zoe could be Starlight or Melody, Penny Ling as Sweetheart and perhaps Minka for Clover. Oh, and Blythe could be either Melody or Starlight. Great song, inspiring, and fitting!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEN38vOJdCY - If You're a Guy

This one reminded me of the guys to some extent too; I suppose Teddy would be Vinnie, Ace would be Russell and Lancer would be Sunil. Or maybe Ace and Teddy would be flip-flopped. The episode it appeared in was about the girls getting stuck in a dumbwaiter and Penny Ling, the only one who could help them, trying to coordinate the boys and prove that girls were just as good as them. Possible Tales episode plot, perhaps? (B
